This is a great question and one that has been perplexing scientists for as long as there have been scientists!
This really depends whether the egg is an egg laid by a chicken or it is an egg containing a chicken?
Egg laying animals have existed long before chickens so if we are just talking about an egg and a chicken then the egg came first!
It gets more complicated if we are talking about a chicken egg…. the substance which allows the egg shell to form is only found in chickens so without a chicken, a chicken egg can’t form.
It is possible that mutations may have occured when prototype chickens produced off spring which led eventually to chickens as we know it. BUT even then a chicken would have had to develop in an egg! So the EGG came first.
