      Hiya!

      The first satellite was called Sputnik 1 and went up into space in 1957. Since then we have been putting satellites up there for all manner of uses. Some help us with navigation and GPS, others look out to learn more about the universe and yet others look to the Earth (the ones I use) to measure everything about the planet we live on.

      At the moment there are around 1100 working satellites in space and new ones are going up all the time. There are also many other old ones that are no longer working.
