      Hi Renniec,

Another great question. Petrol and gas are essentially altered remains of organisms that were once alive.

Most of the oil and gas we find in the ground nowadays were once animals and plants 300 million years ago. These organisms died and collected in the ground. And over millions of years they were squashed very hard in the ground and heated up. This then breaks up all the dead material and changes it into what we call oil. If the oil is squashed and heated even longer, it will change into gas.

Because it takes so long to make oil and gas (millions of years) some scientists think we are using up all of it that is stored in the ground. This is one reason why people are trying to develop green energy using the sun, wind, ocean tides and nuclear energy.

      Hope that answers your question!

      Ekbal
